What to Expect
The sections below outline how I work, where I serve, and how to prepare for an appointment.
-
The field of piano technology is wide and highly specialized. My work focuses on in-home service for modern acoustic pianos, including tuning, maintenance, evaluation, and mechanical refinement.
I work primarily on instruments and systems that benefit from careful on-site service. Some categories of instruments and repairs are better handled by dedicated rebuild shops or digital specialists, and in those cases I’m always happy to help make a referral.
The following are examples of work that fall outside my scope:
Troubleshooting or repair of mechanical or digital player systems (tuning is fine)
Antique square grand pianos
Spinet drop-action repairs
Over-damper (“birdcage”) actions
Full rebuilding and major structural restoration
If you’re unsure whether something applies to your piano, just ask—I’m glad to point you in the right direction.
-
I serve clients within roughly a 40-minute radius of San Diego International Airport.
The online scheduler will confirm whether your address falls within my service area when you enter it.
-
I keep my vaccinations up to date and am happy to wear a mask in your home if you prefer. If anyone in your household is feeling unwell—whether it’s COVID, the flu, or another illness— please let me know and we’ll reschedule. I follow the same policy on my end to help keep everyone safe.
-
To make the visit smooth and efficient, a little preparation helps:
Before I arrive
If there’s a noise, click, or odd behavior you’d like addressed, a short phone video sent ahead of time can be very helpful.
Please clear any items from the top of the piano.
Uprights don’t need to be moved — just enough room to open the lid.
During the service
I like to begin by briefly talking with the primary player to understand what you’ve been experiencing. From there, I’ll get to work.
Because tuning depends on very fine listening, a quiet room makes a meaningful difference:
“Library quiet” is ideal
TVs, music, and beeping devices should be off
Ceiling fans in the room should be turned off
Pets are welcome, but especially vocal dogs may be more comfortable in another room
These small details help ensure the best possible result.
